We aren't alone in our belief that Guanajuato is a special city. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1988. Once a prosperous mining centre that for many years produced two thirds of the world's silver, it is now known for its cultural scene and is home to the Festival Internacional Cervantino, a world renowned arts and culture festival. Strolling through its narrow, winding cobblestoned streets, you are surrounded with colonial architecture and history. Its European flavour blends with the lively music and colours of Mexico. Its many small plazas are great places to eat, shop and listen to music. Watch a mime performing in one of the pedestrian streets, or enjoy a performance by the symphony orchestra on Friday night. The visual arts are well represented with galleries and open air displays in the Jardin de la Union. The citizens of Guanajuato are friendly, making it the perfect place to study Spanish in one of the various language schools. |
